Making Miami County Safer

Experience-Based Solutions for Miami County

Brent's law enforcement career spans over 30 years of service with the Indiana State Police—one of the most respected agencies in the nation.

Make Miami County a Hard Target

Criminals look for easy opportunities. Brent will implement proven strategies to make Miami County a place criminals avoid.

Drawing on three decades of experience identifying what makes communities vulnerable, Brent has a plan to increase deterrence through visibility, partnerships, and strategic enforcement. The details will be developed in coordination with the department and community stakeholders, but the goal is clear: make Miami County a place where crime doesn’t pay.

Increase Law Enforcement Presence

Miami County needs more visible, responsive law enforcement. Brent’s plan includes:

  • Build bridges with local law enforcement, including the Indiana State Police, while building a stronger, more independent Miami County Sheriff’s Departmen
  • Research hiring additional deputies to increase patrol coverage and response times
  • Explore hiring civilians for traditional administrative roles, freeing deputies for patrol and investigations
  • Utilize retired law enforcement officers as special deputies to leverage their experience
  • Partner with local colleges to provide degree incentives for deputies and civilian staff, building a more educated workforce
  • Focus on recruiting and retaining quality 911 dispatch personnel—they’re the first line of response
  • Review current training programs to ensure deputies receive what they need, not just what’s required
  • Develop a strong chaplaincy program for inmates and staff to provide spiritual support
  • Offer Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and mental health services for staff to prevent burnout and keep experienced personnel “in the saddle”
  • Research limited roles in which retired police officers can be used in the Miami County Sheriff’s Department

Combat Drug Trafficking

Methamphetamine and heroin continue to devastate Miami County families. Brent’s approach is based on what he’s seen work over 30+ years:

Consequences Matter Incarceration is still necessary for dealers and repeat offenders. Treatment programs are valuable, but accountability must remain part of the equation.

Stop the Importation Focus resources on stopping drugs from entering Miami County in the first place—targeting suppliers and distribution networks, not just street-level users.

Target Dealing Operations Work drug cases in both county and city jurisdictions, coordinating with local agencies and federal partners when appropriate.

On Marijuana Legalization: Brent opposes recreational marijuana legalization. Based on 30+ years of observation in law enforcement, marijuana remains a gateway drug that leads to harder substance abuse. Medical exceptions administered by physicians are appropriate. This position is based on experience, not politics.

More of Brent's Priorities

Burglaries aren’t just property crimes—they’re violations of safety and security that affect how people feel in their own homes.

Brent will:

  • Treat organized burglary rings as serious criminal enterprises worthy of significant investigative resources
  • Investigate connections to drug activity, as many burglaries are committed to fund addiction
  • Work to recover stolen property and bring offenders to justice
  • Build community partnerships to improve reporting and prevention

Rape and sexual assault cases require sensitivity, expertise, and dedication. Victims deserve compassionate treatment and relentless pursuit of justice.

Brent will ensure:

  • Victims are treated with compassion and respect throughout the investigation and prosecution process
  • Provide education and resources on prevention and support services
  • Pursue justice relentlessly for survivors, using all available investigative tools and partnerships

Having worked numerous sexual assault cases throughout his career, Brent understands the trauma victims experience and the careful approach these cases require.

Law enforcement can’t do it alone. Strong communities make law enforcement’s job easier—and make Miami County safer for everyone.

Brent believes in supporting the organizations that serve as the “glue” holding communities together:

  • Churches
  • Schools
  • 4-H and FFA
  • Youth sports programs
  • Traditional community organizations

These groups, along with strong families, create the foundation for safe communities. When they thrive, crime decreases and young people have positive paths forward.

Brent took an oath to defend the Indiana Constitution when he became a State Trooper. He chose to defend it with his life—and he hasn’t changed his mind.

Brent’s priority order:

  1. U.S. Constitution
  2. Indiana Constitution
  3. Indiana statutory law

Second Amendment Brent fully supports the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, as affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court. With exceptions for those prohibited under Indiana law, law-abiding citizens have the right to own and possess firearms.

First Amendment Brent supports freedom of religion, free speech, freedom of the press, peaceful assembly, and the right to petition government. These rights come with responsibilities—when assemblies become dangerous or laws are broken, law enforcement must act to protect public safety.

Constitutional Law Enforcement As sheriff, Brent will operate within constitutional boundaries while ensuring public safety. The Constitution isn’t a barrier to good law enforcement—it’s the foundation of it.
